Are you happy? It's the UN's International Day of Happiness today, so you should be...right? I don't get it. What are we expected to do today? We probably need a UN International day of the Reality-Check at some point soon. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of happiness, I try to achieve it as often as possible in my life. I'd choose happiness over sadness any day of the week...but... Happiness is a transitory, internal state. It's not permanent and you can't achieve it for others. Further, I would suggest that without contrast, ie. sadness, happiness would not exist. By example...the chemical dopamine gets fired off when your social media account goes 'bing', your message flashes or someone 'likes' your post triggering a feeling of happiness. If your phone 'pinged' all the time, it would lose its effect. Happiness is a state of hormonal imbalance where our happiness hormones rise, changing how we feel and perceive the world around us. Just like a drug, the effect wears off and requires even greater triggers to achieve a similar effect. The pursuit of never-ending happiness is therefore ultimately a path to despair. The actual path to increased happiness is counter-inituitive. ...Expose yourself to things that challenge you, that push you, that are often uncomfortable...that in the short term may make you unhappy...deliberately. By exposing yourself to such challenges, you prove to yourself that you can overcome hardship, you build tools, skills and strategies. A survival mentality then builds self-confidence. Self-confidence means when things arise that will negatively impact your life...you'll have the mindset to overcome. You'll spend less time in a state of sadness or distress because you've trained yourself for action. The net effect of less time in a state of sadness or distress must equate to increased overall happiness. Therefore: Is the true pursuit of happiness actually the pursuit of the skills, tools and mindset to faster overcome the psychological impact of events that trigger sadness?
